二氧化碳灭火剂是以液态的形式加压充装在灭火器中,由于二氧化碳的平衡蒸汽压高,瓶阀一打开,液体立即通过虹吸管、导管和喷嘴并经过喷筒喷出,液态的二氧化碳迅速汽化,并从周围空气中吸收大量的热,(1千克液态二氧化碳气化时需要578KJ热量)但由于喷筒隔绝了对外界的热传导,因此二氧化碳液态气化时,只能吸收自身的热量。导致液体本身温度急剧降低,当其温度下降到零下78.5摄氏度(升华点)时,就有细小的雪花状二氧化碳固体出现。所以以灭火剂喷射出来的是温度很低的气体和固体的二氧化碳,尽管二氧化碳温度很低,对燃烧物有一定的冷却作用,然而这种作用远不足以扑灭火焰。
它的灭火作用主要是增加空气中不燃烧、不助燃的成分,使空气中的氧气含量减少,实验表明:燃烧区域空气中氧气的浓度小于等于百分之十二,二氧化碳的浓度为百分之三十到百分之三十五时,绝大多数的燃烧都会熄灭。
二氧化碳具有较高的密度,约为空气的1.5倍。在常压下,液态的二氧化碳会立即汽化,一般1kg的液态二氧化碳可产生约0.5立方米的气体。灭火时,二氧化碳气体可以排除空气而包围在燃烧物体的表面或分布于较密闭的空间中,降低可燃物周围或防护空间内的氧浓度,产生窒息作用而灭火。另外,二氧化碳从储存容器中喷出时,会由液体迅速汽化成气体,而从周围吸引部分热量,起到冷却的作用。
