硼砂和硼酸是火箭、破璃、医药等工业上的重要原料,在玻璃工业上用量尤大,在目前我国国产硼杪和硼酸的供应还未十分充裕的时候,应在大限度内减少硼的进口,并玻璃工业以外,其他工业用硼的需要。因此,进行了改进玻璃质量的研究,要求在璃璃质量、提高其化学稳定性和耐热度的前提下,尽量减低玻璃成份中硼的含量。

玻璃柱尽管有有易碎的缺点，但它具有化学惰性好，制备的柱子柱效高，便于观察柱子情况，使用温度范围较宽等优点，依然被广泛使用。
